Procter-Rihl architects specialise in retrofitting, new built residential, and urban realm projects. We strive to be both climate and culturally responsive by engaging with history, context, and locality while producing creative award-winning architecture. We have expertise in designing projects with low operational carbon emissions, reduced maintenance costs, and improved comfort by using passive principles and modern methods of construction. Widely published in the UK and abroad. PR architects have won several awards including; RIBA Award and finalist for Architect of the Year. Our Slice House has been recently become a listed building in Brazil for a "structure of value and spatial quality, constituting a significant element of structure in the urban context", (Equivalent Grade II, UK).

RESEARCH

Our practice works in conservation areas and felt the need for updated and consistent technical and planning guidance to enable Climate Emergency Retrofitting.

Poorly insulated homes in the UK comprise 20% of total UK carbon emissions. One quarter of these homes, 7 million, are heritage or architecturally significant which therefore represent 5% of total UK carbon emissions.

Through ACAN, Architects Climate Action Network, Chris has authored this guide which provides planners and local authorities with a toolkit to change local guidance enabling both heritage repair and retrofit to the highest modern standards where possible. A worked Conservation Area example shows what may be achieved for windows, roofs, & walls.
